The Bitch was draped in a saree, chosen by family members and then bathed and clothed for the ceremony Sunday at a Hindu temple in the southern state of Tamil Nadu,

The Hindustan Times newspaper said. Selvakumar told that he had been suffering since he stoned two dogs to death and hung their bodies from a tree 15 years ago.

An astrologer had told Selvakumar the wedding was the only way he could cure the maladies. It did not say whether his situation had improved.

Deeply superstitious people in rural India sometimes organize weddings to dogs and other animals, believing it can ward off certain curses.

The paper said the groom and his family then had a feast, while the dog got a bun.

P Selvakumar (33) married the dog Selvi at a wedding ceremony in the local Ganesh temple in A Vilathikulam village near Manamadurai of Sivaganga district on Sunday. Selvakumar marries a dog to atone for his ‘sin’ of killing two dogs 15 years ago. While the groom and his kin enjoy a sumptuous meal, the bridal dog was given a bun.

Selvakumar recalled that 15 years ago he had killed two dogs when they were mating and strung their bodies from a tree. ‘After that, my legs and hands got paralysed and I lost hearing in one ear. Only recently, after treatment I have managed to become mobile and that too with a crutch,” he said.

A local astrologer had said he can be cured of his physical impairment if he atoned for killing those two dogs by marrying a female dog. So Selvakumar got his relatives to find a stray bitch, which was given a bath and draped in a saree. Selvakumar (33) and Selvi then marched in a procession to the temple where Selvakumar tied the thaali (mangalsutra) around the dog’s neck. While the bridegroom and his relatives had a sumptuous meal the bridal dog was given a bun.
